Innovative Solutions for Illicit Discharge Detection
Environmental Canine Services LLC (ECS) continues to be the leader in the use of scent trained canines for illicit discharge detection and source tracking in storm drain systems in both urban and rural settings.
As the first and only company in the world to scent train canines as a rapid screening method to detect and source track human sewage in stormwater, ECS has proven to be a cost effective and accurate option for National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) Phase I and II requirements. This method has also proven successful as a rapid screening method to track human sewage sources responsible for beach closings in Great Lakes coastal communities.
ECS handlers receive immediate feedback on the presence or absence of human sewage and/or detergents in the field by using scent trained canines to investigate storm drains systems. This instant feedback allows ECS and their client to track the source immediately in the field. On the fly results can be used to target “hot spots” for further testing rather than collecting samples from multiple random sites. This quick feedback has shown to lower sampling and personnel costs and reduced traditional waiting periods for laboratory results.
ECS employees are not only experienced dog handlers but stormwater professionals experienced in data collection, sampling, chain of custody, GPS and land use issues. Combining their skills as canine handlers and in the field experiences provides a solid IDDE team.
